CVD Researchers Examine HIV Viral Load in Pregnant Women in Malawi

Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health faculty and colleagues from the Blantyre Malaria Project at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences in Malawi highlight the success of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Malawi. The Malaria Research Program is dedicated to developing and applying innovative scientific tools to fight global infectious disease, eliminating malaria, and training the next generation of scientists.

Approximately 90% of women who reported receiving ART had an undetectable viral load however many women did not report previous ART exposure, likely due to persistent stigma associated with the diagnosis of HIV infection. This report identifies especially vulnerable populations of pregnant women who require additional support.
